About

The Mater Heart Run

Our Story

The Mater Heart Run was started in 2002 as the main fundraising avenue for the Mater Misericordiae Hospital Cardiac Program. The Cardiac Program itself began in 1995 when the hospital identified a critical gap in cardiac care for children from underprivileged backgrounds. The first open-heart surgery was successfully performed in 1996.

In 2008, the hospital launched free cardiac outreach screening camps across the country to screen for heart ailments and educate communities about acquired heart disease. Early detection has been shown to lead to better clinical outcomes.

Our Impact
  • 6,500+ children have benefited since inception
  • 2,295+ open-heart surgeries performed
  • 3,389+ catheterisation procedures completed
  • 157,000+ children screened for heart conditions
  • 11 counties now participate in the run
